The Mt. Desert Festival of Chamber Music takes pleasure in announcing its 47th anniversary season of summer concerts at the historic Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor, Maine. Four prominent string quartets, all favorites of Mt. Desert audiences, will return to the festival. The following are some highlights of the season:

Inside

The Shanghai Quartet opens the series on July 20th with a program of Beethoven, Mendelssohn and Brahms's beloved G minor Piano Quartet with pianist/music director Todd Crow.

On July 27th, the Borromeo String Quartet's program will include a string quartet by the Russian-born composer Lera Auerbach, as well as the dynamic Piano Quintet (with Todd Crow) by Amy Beach, recognized as the first truly successful American female composer.

The August 3rd program will feature music of the Baroque era with celebrated soprano Dominique Labelle, making her first appearance at the festival, and renowned countertenor Drew Minter. Other guest artists include violinist Stephanie Chase, violist Dov Scheindlin, and cellist Mark Shuman.

On August 10th, the Daedalus Quartet performs Berg's Lyric Suite, one of the monuments of 20th-century music, and Schubert's "Death and the Maiden" quartet.

The season closes on August 17th with the Brentano String Quartet in a program to include Stephen Hartke's recent "Night Songs for a Desert Flower" and Mendelssohn's A major String Quintet with guest violist Hsin-Yun Huang.

Other composers to be heard this summer are Bach, Handel, Haydn, and (in celebration of his 200th birthday) Robert Schumann.

The festival aims to present chamber music at its best in an intimate setting. Much of the aura, which is both informal and serious, is due to the ambiance of the Neighborhood House, whose fine acoustics and old world charm add much to the intimacy of communication upon which chamber music thrives.
